Govt Not Interested In Sending People To Jail —Ikuforiji

RT. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has reiterated that the state government is not interested in sending people to jail over the new traffic law and other Bills that it recently signed into law.
The Speaker stated this when officials of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch, paid a courtesy visit to the House recently.
Ikuforiji said the law was made to correct the anomaly in the society, ensure the safety of the people and develop the state.
He implored the association to work with the state government to ensure that Lagos State is taken to a greater height as this will make the people get the best from the present government.
Commending the association on its roles in the growth of the country, the Speaker said: “The history of the country will not be complete without a mention of the enormous contributions of the NBA.
“Right from pre-independence to post-independence era, the association has been productive and we must support it and actively show interest in what concerns the NBA.”
Ikuforiji urged members of the association to see their profession as a responsibility bestowed upon them by the almighty God, imploring them to take their business seriously as they are always entangled with national interest and development.
He promised to always keep them informed whenever laws were being proposed in the House, and also solicited their support for the House and its activities.
Earlier, the chairman of association, Barrister Monday Ubani, said the purpose of the visit was to introduce new executives of the association and to seek the support of the House in their activities.
He commended the House for what he described as the life transforming laws it has passed, saying such laws are aimed at re-shaping the lives of residents of the state.
Mr. Ubani said his association is pleased with the new Traffic Law, the Tenancy Law and the Criminal Law, which he said would contribute to the socio-economic development of the state
Requesting that the House always invite them during public hearings, he said: “As lawyers, we are the ones that apply any laws that are made.
“As a result of this, we want a situation where we can defend the laws that are made when people ask questions about them.”
